    Hey guys,

I have a watch, ok, it's my 'holy grail'.. I bought one that was not in the greatest condition, all original and fully working (and serviced), but a bit beat up. I don't mind it like this as I can wear it and don't feel paranoid about reducing the value of it with a little ding or a scratch.

Well, I have an opportunity to pick up a new one that is in stellar condition. Unworn, box and papers and excellent condition.

Since I'm mainly interested in wearing, and not accumulating 'investments', is there any point in trading up? I fear if I had such a good condition piece, I would be less likely to wear it and that sort of defeats the purpose.

I could use some feedback on the trade up game and what the pros and cons are for a watch lover, but not necessarily a hardcore collector.

As always, I greatly appreciate your feedback and thoughts.

    Thanks!

    J

Just my two cents, I would trade up! Your grail may not show up in again in the condition you described! You'll still wear the better conditioned watch just with more respect! Anyway that's my take I'm sure many more will chime in on this one!! Regards!

Definitely buy the better watch. That means you can have a beater that you know you love, and another in fine shape for "formal wear". And if you want to sell the beater in the future, you know you have the piece you love...

    Thanks guys!

I think I'd have to sell the beater to justify the cost so kind of one or the other.

    Decisions... hrumph.

Because when push comes to shove, we have your back.

...... and you can cite anyone of us as an example of how bad you COULD be. Hell, you'll look like a saint in comparison!

ps - I vote trade up for condition, any day and twice on Sundays. Condition is the trump card.

For me it would depend on the watch - if it's a modern watch I'd probably keep the beater. I've seen some amazing refinishing work that has made pieces look pretty much brand new once again. If it's a vintage one I'd go for the one with better condition...

    What's the watch? :)

    Keep both.
    No question.
I have a DB4. Can't use it. Too valuable now, in too good a condition.
The old beaten up '76 vantage? That gets thrashed, every day.
    But I wouldn't sell either.

Same with watches. One perfect, one thrasher.

    Holy Grail, 376.0822

May have a different incoming soon though, so trying to concentrate on that before making a decision on this.

Still, wanted to start thinking ahead. So thanks all for the feedback!

Just so that you know, many of us are in the same predicament of do I buy or don't I buy when we see a grail in great condition. It is a decision that is made with much thought and consideration, research and patience....:)

but mostly as an impulse and then we have to figure out which other pieces to sell to pay for it or how to get it past our spouses! ::facepalm1::

Just do it... This is why the forum was created in the first place....so we could find each other across the great expanse of the interwebs for no other reason than to give each other a virtual shove in the back when asked.

At some stage in the future, you are going to need parts - so keep both. ::stirthepot::
