As some of you know, I have decided to sell from my collection some of the early Speedmasters in order to raise funds for a another project. Here is now a rare and collectible Omega Speedmaster CK 2998-1 with a fantastic deep coloured dial, BASE 1000 bezel, leaf hands etc. but no box, papers or bracelet. The dial I would call pristine for its age but look youself. The colour is deep and still very rich. Luminous material still very thick with only very little signs of ageing. Very slight sings of dust of luminous material around the markers. This watch is in attractive and appealing condition. I did not order an extract of archive as this makes no sense with the early Speedmasters. They were produced at Lemania in Orient, a subcontractor from Omega at that time, from where there are no other records than the delivery date. A verbal information however I received over third party from the museum is, that the watch was delivered to Belgium in November 18th, 1959, so it is one of the very early 2998's. The watch is running but mainly not on wrist but in the bank safe. It got a service a couple of years ago. The central second hand however needs a readjustment. No guarantee for technical condition. Price for the watch is 37k EUR obo. The second Speedmaster seen on some of the pics is a 145.012-69 and is not included in this offer. I took these pics with a younger reference to give you an idea about the colour of the 2998-1 dial. P.S.: Due to request some additional words about the lume in general and specially on this watch: I have no Geiger counter so I can not confirm about radioactivity of the lume. Anyway to me personally the "fetish" about lume is rather a Rolex thing than Omega, especially not Speedmaster. This is why I never thought about buying a Geiger. More than often we see Speedmaster examples where the lume fell off or turned into ugly something over the years. A submariner missing lume turns ugly, not so does a Speedmaster . However, the dial and lume of this very 2998-1 looks very good and untouched to me. This dial is an outstanding example with only little damage to its luminois material. There are slight traces of lume dust around markers which underlines and confirms to me that it is radium. The colouration of the hands lume sometimes look slightly lighter as can be seen on pics. Wether the lume of the hands has been retouched at some earlier point wether not, I can not say or confirm. It is possible but looks all very matching. Anyway o me lume nevrer is a deal breaker for Speedmasters or a serious price factor and also should not be. It can vanish easily any time over the next years to come. Speedmaster radium lume is not at all solid, it is rather pretty soft. If you look at the pictures you will spot some marks at the lume showing this soft texture about which I am talking and the easyness of being damaged or vanishing. But of course this lume in such condition looks stunning.
I have seen this watch in person and can certify that the color of the lume is superb and is one of the best examples of this type of patination
Thank you very much gentlemen for all the kind words. I do think that the price I ask for this watch is moderate and fair. I am interested in a smooth and fair transaction and want to see the watch go into good hands. Expecting your futher offers BTW, the watch is located in Berlin in case a F2F is desired.
The communication and the transaction was a great pleasure. Thank you! And also thanks to this great forum of course!
Pic (please) or it didn't happen would love to see the smile of the happy owners face reflected off the crystal ...
Here you go, back from service with Simon and on a 7077 as it should be. Serial is too early - hope this is attributable to it being one of the first. Dial is pretty radioactive by the way, this is Radium for sure.
Huge congrats to the fantastic seller (ex-owner) @BASE1000 and to the proud owner @drhex wear it and enjoy it on good health!
