Got a new to me old seamaster. It's got a red/pink seal or gasket inside and dried up grease like thing. Does that need to be replaced and re sealed?

The case back gasket is a hard plastic one used for many snap on case backs. Once they have been used and the case closed once, they never hold as tight. They are considered one time use only, similar to a hard plastic crystal gasket.

The dried grease like substance is either accumulated body cheese, or someone's attempt to improperly lubricate the seal - these are installed dry.

    Cheers, Al

Sorry for that visual - I deal with it almost daily so you get used to it after a while.

Hopefully there aren't any soft ripened cheeses on the menu for dinner tonight! ;)
