    I'm smitten!

This the Ultra Rare Omega Pie Pan Pan Constellation ... 1970s

Well, that was part of seller's tag line! After a few mouse clicks and some questions (including here by PM) I decided to pursue this Constellation.

Seems this is one of the latest Connies produced. This example shines and I'm pleased with the condition. Seller said ".. watch is in near new condition " and I agree. Doesn't seem polished at all.

Date window flat & lacks the faceting present on other Connies, correct in this example. Quick set!!! ...

All summed up, my first Constellation is one of the last produced. In excellent condition.

    Many thanks to Evan ( @gatorcpa ) & Steve ( @cicindela ) for insights and help !!!

Of course credit as well to Desmond ( @mondodec ) for a very informative blog ...

Indeed it is uncommon to have pie pan with constellation script on the upper side of dial.
    Congratz for the catch !!!!

One of the nice things about this Japan edition is that, although slimmer, they are bigger diameter wise (unless Gator contradicts me) than a 168.005 !

    Nice pick-up:thumbsup:

Nope, they are slightly smaller (34mm diameter) than the .005's and considerably thinner. They are also smaller top to bottom, although I haven't measured it.

The pie-pan dial is less pronounced, although the finish is sunburst in the center and flat on the outside of the register. It contrasts nicely.

There was just a thread on the PuristS regarding an extremely rare (only one that I know of) gold plated, dome dial version of this Ref. 168.0065 model:

Ah, I had only heard bigger, nice to get the correct info. I have missed out on about 3 of these now, perhaps one day.

Found this old thread... Congrats JohnSteed on your acquisition! The 168.0065 is the one that got me started on collecting Constellations. Love the history behind this reference.
Here are mine - 3 in steel and one in gold plated. I wasn't aware that the gold-plated one is considered very rare..

Interesting find indeed. You don't see them floating around that often. Congrats!

Gatorcpa, I fell in love with this watch after reading about it in Desmond's blog some time ago, and shortly after I embarked on a hunt for it. All my 168.0065's are from Japan, naturally, where I visit at least once a year. From there it has been a slippery slope down for me and I've gone on to collect other Constellation models.

Actually I had another stainless steel 168.0065 but sold it to a vintage watch collector I bumped into at my watchmaker's store after I sent it for servicing. I was reluctant to let it go but the guy practically tried to pry it off from my wrist!

I did the same thing. I was able to quietly bid on one of these from eBay, when I knew that Desmond was also on the hunt.

However, the watch gods got me, as the shipment was almost sent back to HK due to screw-ups by USPS. While I was waiting for the package, I was able to help Desmond acquire a very nice early US market Globemaster.

Soon after that, I was able to obtain my own example of a similar Globemaster.

Moral of the story is what goes around comes around.
