I feel rjd1 either misunderstood terribly or did not wish to understand and had an axe to grind.

...especially since the same "last post" was cut and pasted to every thread started by him. I looked back, and didn't see any extra curt posts, or anything like that.

I gotta say it's ironic. I came from a Forum where for the past 3 years I was a prolific and at times rabid member that used to fear being banished, at times on a daily basis. Then I come here, which I must say is a breath of fresh air, especially after it only took 3 seconds to read the rules! (What rules? Hey we can even swear, albeit appropriately, but still.). And here it is, a member "banning themselves??" 😵‍💫
A moderators dream come true, self moderation.
(NB I am still a member there, but I really prefer it here. So much more relaxed and non commercialised.)

You can say what forum you were on - WUS. Look through here for the post with the Hitler Downfall parody on WUS.

Forums can be odd beasts. I believe that the "freeness" of a forum is directly related to how big it is, and if it's a money making proposition for the forum owners. The big forums like TZ, WUS, etc. are most certainly in the category of money makers for their owners. They like to say it's all about watch enthusiasts enjoying their passion, but the reality is quite different.

The smaller forums I am a member of are far more tolerant of things generally, and from my particular perspective as someone "in the industry" I am allowed to post things that on others forums I would be banned for. On one major forum I was banned because one of my customers posted a watch I serviced for him, and said I did a really good job on the service....they said I was shilling....I didn't even know about the post until the whole thing was over basically....

Not so coincidentally, this was shortly after that forum debuted a watch repair referral service, where you could book your watch in for service through their site, with them taking a cut of each repair I assume. I guess they didn't like any competition...

I never really understood why people announce they are leaving a forum (let alone many times over), unless it's to get attention and to be begged back. If you want to leave, just leave.

Cheers, Al

I'm more than aware of what I can say here, though more importantly, I think it is more for me to state which watch forum I was referring to, rather than you to make assumptions on my behalf, regardless on how well you think you know me, (We met, once, for 10 minutes, perhaps 2 years ago?)

Generally, it is not my style to speak bad, or even negatively, of either a Watch forum, or person, without a provocative reason, and in the case of the Watch forum you refer to, I personally have no such reason to denigrate them, or name them. Basically, I do not feel the need to make myself feel better about my shortcomings by putting others down. Sure others here may feel differently, and I empathise, if not agree, though I can only post from my own experience.

I've always believed "Every adversity in life has a seed to a greater or equal benefit", and thus Omega Forums has a lot to be grateful for some of the WUS bannings, Dennis for one. I joined just as a lot of the "greats" were gone... Though am now personally interested in your own experience that influenced your attitude Daniel.?

I do not see this as a Watch Forum Competition. Watch Forums are made up of people, and it takes all kinds to create a flavour. After 2900+ posts elsewhere, I felt like tasting something different, something fresh, and was attracted to the scent of the fresh and free air here.

Perhaps it is Time for an introductory and SOTC thread from me.

Definitely! 👍

FYI: if everyone doesn't know already, that YouTube parody was made by David / DMB - another former long time member of WUS who was banned.

Firsly yande, my apologies. I don't profess to know you - I merely profess to be a smart arse.

My perspective on Why I came here? I found WUS:
- too full of fanboys
- too full of "let's see photos of [watch] on/with/near/on top of/underneath [other object]"
- too many same/similar threads about how good omega is compared to [other brand] or seamaster vs other brand version
- not very helpful or friendly

I joined WUS, WTF and a couple of others I had just one watch and was hunting for a BoR. I didn't know much and didn't learn much at WUS, a there didn't seem to be much vintage horological discussion. The focus was also mainly on sports watches which were not my interest at the time. I didn't feel there was much of a community, or genuine conversation. I should also confess that I only really looked at the omega forum and the omega fake busters forum.

Here, it is more casual, I can be myself, I can make wisearse cracks, we can hijack threads, etc. I feel the people here really go out of their way to help and teach. I know I have learn a lot here.

Now, I pop acros to WUS omega fake busters and feel that I can help/contribute to others. Thanks to the knowledge I've got from people here.
