Hello friends, here is my new addition with credit to a fellow member for helping me source it.. It's a Genève Admiralty or Amirauté as it is sometimes called from the late 60's. A reference 165.0038 with a caliber 552 non date rotor movement. Some have the red Anchor, some I believe don't. I also think these commonly came on a flex bracelet (see below) but I am trying to source a small 17mm perforated black strap for it. These are very striking watches, the dial has a contrast of steel on black with the red seconds hand (Very Top Gear) and red markers. The steel hour markers catch the light and really open up the dial. I have found the size to compliment my skinny wrists well, and at 36mm has surprisingly good presence. The other attraction is the long angular lugs which look like the earlier chronometers. And the brushed steel case and protected crown has a military feel. Seems a versatile piece. This one came to me in nice shape, and I would say it's getting harder to find them like this.. I hope you like it: Wrist shot (aka MMMD special....)
Very nice, the case looks to be super sharp compared to most I've seen. The sports Omega's from the late 1960's and early 1970's are fantastic watches with great colour schemes, interesting functions, solid movements and innovative case designs. Beware, it is a very slippery slope
What was the rationale for this model line? Yes, I get the nautical/waterproof theme, but why a separate model line from the Seamaster?
Good question. Going from what i've read they split off into three different groups, all varying slightly. Some with rotating bezels, various dial styles, and more robust cases. They paved the way for the Seamaster Proffessional line (compare their protected crown/case style) My example was probably just used for light Yachting, as it is only waterproof up to 30 metres.. P.s. it was also around the time Seamaster De Ville was introduced, so maybe that had something to do with it, to fill a gap in the market.
I was aware i was endangering the pun, but its always tricky to gauge just how obvious you are being without verbal cues.... Feedback taken onboard!
Fabulous piece there. Looks like it was a safe queen, so sharp! What is engraved on the lower lug...looks like a number of some sort?
